Questions and Answers

Harrah Answers Your Feng Shui Questions

Q: Harrah, how can feng shui help me get over the fear and worry of our struggling economy?

A: First, I suggest you make the firm decision that you are in control of your future regardless of circumstances. Once you decide to be in charge of your destiny you can begin to strengthen your environment in a way that reflects your decision. The way to do so is to enhance your home with items that represent "stablity, firmness, and unwavering." Mountain energy represents this well. Place a picture of a mountain landscape in your home to represent your "solid" decision to be unmoved and unshaken by today's economy.

Career

Q: Dear Harrah: I have been teaching for several years now and am starting to feel restless. I want to explore different careers and yet not sure about how to start. Is there something I can bring into my home that will help me with this process?

A: Yes, there are several things you can do to open up new career opportunities. First, it’s important to understand that a major principle of Feng Shui is to understand the bagua map. The bagua map is used to identify the nine major sections of your home and how they correlate the nine sections of our lives. According to the bagua map, the career sector is located in the front center section of your home. To find your career sector in your home, take the width of your home from the far front left to the far front right. Divide this into three equal parts. The front center section is your career area. This area is frequently where the front door is located.

Water is the main element connected to the career sector. Therefore, water makes a great theme for this area of your home. When water flows, money flows.

Here are some items you can consider placing in your career sector, keeping in mind again that the main element is water.

  • A water fountain
  • A fish tank
  • A beautiful bowl of water with a flower floating on top

If you decide on a water fountain be sure to keep the fountain on twenty-four hours a day, filling as needed. You can add a few drops of chlorine to keep the water fresh and clean.

Artwork is another great way to increase your ability to create a new career path. Use artwork that depicts a path, such as a garden path, or possibly a picture of a bridge that will bridge you from your current career to your new career. You can also place items and reading materials, which relate to your new career. For example, if you were considering becoming a doctor, you could add a medical journal, or if you were considering a career in photography, a camera would be a terrific addition to this area.

Let’s not forget the outside of your home. One of my personal favorites for bringing in new opportunities into my life is with colorful flowers greeting me at the front door. Inevitably, every time I have planted or placed beautiful colorful flowers next to my entry, new opportunities have come to me. Hanging a set of wind chimes outside your front door will awaken the energy of opportunity. Sweep your porch and placing a new welcome mat at the door, to welcome the new opportunities that are coming to you. Wash your front door and make sure it opens freely without blockage.

This brings to me a good point, clearing the clutter. I know we have heard a lot about clearing the clutter, but it is the number one rule in Feng Shui. For until you clear the clutter you may not have the space to bring in anything new. Spend a few moments picking up, and clearing out anything in the career sector of your home or on the path to your front door, which no longer serves you, or is broken and in disrepair.

As you apply these Feng Shui techniques to your home, know that you will be embarking on a wonderful, new and glorious career path created perfectly for you, by you.

Q: Dear Harrah: Can I apply feng shui to my apartment, or is it only for houses?

A: Yes, you can apply feng shui to your apartment. The principles are the same regardless of the area you are working with. If fact, you can apply feng shui to any dwelling, be it an apartment, a house, or an office. You can also apply feng shui to your yard, your patio, and the individual rooms in your home.

Q: Is feng shui a religion?

A: No, feng shui is not a religion. While feng shui has its’ roots in Chinese philosophy and folklore, it is not a religion but the study of your environment and how it affects your well-being.

Q: There seem to be a variety of feng shui practices. Which form does At Home with Harrah follow?

A: Our founder, Harrah Brown, is certified in BTB feng shui. BTB is one of the most common styles of feng shui practiced in the United States utilizing the orientation of the front door to determine the bagua areas of the home.

Q: Dear Harrah: My husband and I are thinking about buying a new home. How can we tell if a house has good Feng Shui?

A: There are several ways to tell if a home is considered to have “good feng shui,” or good chi, which is the energy of the home. The easiest way is to take a look around the property. Does the home you are considering look and feel well taken care of?  Isthe exterior of the home look well maintained, or is it unkempt and neglected? Is there an easy, unobstructed path to the front door? How about the neighboring homes, are they well maintained? This is especially important for the homes located closest to the home you’re considering.

Animals that live on the property are also a good indication as to whether or not a home has good feng shui. Take notice of the animals. If they seem healthy, vibrant and thriving, this is a good sign of positive energy for the home.

Then there are the more obvious ways to tell if a home has good feng shui. How you feel when you are inside the home is of great importance. A home with good feng shui just naturally feels good. The home is clean, well lit and has plenty of room to move comfortably, without bumping into walls or furniture.

Good luck with your house hunting. And remember, while there are many ways to determine if a home has good feng shui; there are also a variety of simple techniques that can be added to any home to enhance it’s beauty and energy.

Q: Dear Harrah:

Is it true that if from my front door leads straight to my back door, that it means my money goes right out the door?  If so, how do I correct the problem?

A: Yes and no, it may not mean that "money" goes right out the door, more correctly it means that "energy" will enter and exit out the doors.  There are several ways to correct this problem: Hang a clear crystal between the front and back doors,  place a small piece of furniture in between front and back doors to create meandering energy and also the placing of a small rug in front of the back door will act as a "stop" sign, preventing energy from exiting too quickly.

Q: Harrah, is it true I shouldn't have pictures of my children in my bedroom?

A: Correct.  No pictures of children, pets, friends or deceased relatives in the bedroom.  They represent "other's eyes" in the bedroom.   The bedroom is for you and your significant other.  If single, then pictures containing two people, two flowers, two lions etc., would be fine.

Q: Harrah,  What is your favorite area of the bagua and why?

A: My personal favorite is the Helpful People and Travel area.  It is located in the front right corner of your home.  The most wonderful experiences like being invited on exotic vacations, etc. happen in my life when I make adjustments to that area of the bagua.  It's known as the area of synchronicity.  Give this area some love and attention and see what happens for you.

Q: What is the purpose of the Gratitude Globe?  How does it work?

A: The Gratitude Globe is a visual reminder of that which you are grateful for.  The more are grateful for, the more you get to be grateful for. In feng shui, placing items in the home which are symbolic of that which you wish to create add to the strenthening of your intention.

Spinning the Gratitude Globe regularly gets the energy moving and sets your intention, whether it is to create more love, money, or opportunities, etc.

Love

Q. Dear Harrah: My husband and I have been married for 12 years. We have three children and both have satisfying careers. My husband and I are very busy between our work and the children leaving us with little or no energy left for our relationship. How can I use feng shui to revive the romance and passion that once existed?

A. To recapture the romantic feelings you and your husband once had you can activate the love energy in your bedroom. Begin to think of your bedroom as beautiful, romantic getaway made just for you and your husband. To do so, remove any photographs in your bedroom that contain people other than you and your husband in them. Photographs of family, friends and pets, can be relocated to other areas of the home. Next take a look at your walls; is the artwork conducive to an evening of romance? If not, replace the artwork with art that reminds you of love and passion. For example, in my bedroom I have a beautifully framed piece of artwork of a man and a woman in a passionate embrace. Also, remove any pictures that may have a man or woman alone; we want to create the energy of a happy, loving couple, not a single person.

When decorating your bedroom for romance, think of tantalizing all the senses. Scented candles, a fluffy comforter, silky clothing, creamy luscious lotions, soothing sounds, and dim lighting, all set the mood for an evening of passion.

If you really want to heat things up in the bedroom, purchase a set of soft, sensuous sheets, pink for affection or red for romance. Adding fresh pink or red flowers to the bedroom will liven things up, so will adding two candles next to the bed.

Speaking of the bed, have you checked underneath yours lately? I had a client tell me she and her husband were completely bored in the bedroom. When we looked underneath the bed, lo and behold, there was the culprit; a large wooden board used as an extension for the kitchen table, and, if that wasn’t enough, the ironing board was also stored under the bed. So be sure to check under the bed and remove all extra items, so the love energy can flow.

Good luck, and have fun rekindling the fire of romance and passion.

Q: Where is the love and relationship area?

A: The love and relationship area is located in the back right corner of your home or office.

Q: Is it true that by adding the color red to my bedroom I can increase the passion in my relationship?

A: Yes. Red is the color of passion. It represents heat and intensity, so by adding even a small amount of this color to your bedroom you can evoke feelings of aliveness and passion.

Q: I have been single now for five years and I am tired of being alone. I am ready to meet a man and start dating again. Do you have any feng shui suggestions for me?

A: Congratulations on being ready to start dating again. Just making that decision and having the intention will move you toward your goal. Start by looking at your bedroom and checking for items grouped in singles such as one chair, one lamp, one nightstand. Two is the number for lovers, so remove single items or create pairs. I love to purchase a new set of sheets to activate the energy of the bedroom – try a soft pink or peach. A few other ways to invite love into your home include adding some fire with a pair of candles or placing a crystal in the window.

One of my favorite suggestions for encouraging and welcoming love is to get a pet, preferably a male. You mentioned you are tired of being alone. Having a pet such as a dog or cat will enable you to share your love. When you have a pet to love you are generating the energy of love and since like attracts like, you just may attract the love of your life.

Wealth

Q: Dear Harrah: I have heard a lot about the “Wealth” corner. Where is it located and how do I activate it?

A: The Wealth corner of your home, according to the bagua, is located in the back, left corner of your home. It is also known as the Abundance corner meaning that abundance comes in many forms, not just in money.

It is extremely important that this area of the home be kept clean and free of clutter. If your Wealth area is sloppy and full of clutter your finances may mirror that. This is not the area to store unpaid bills. Instead, energize this area with a large, healthy plant. The jade plant is a favorite because its round leaves resemble coins. Placing a plant in the Wealth area of your home will act as a “money magnet.”

Water is another natural enhancement for the Wealth area. Water flow equals cash flow. Placing a bubbling water fountain or an aquarium in this area is sure to get the money flowing in. Remember to keep your fountain running twenty-four hours a day and refill as needed.

As with any of the feng shui suggestions, your intentions are what make the difference in how effective your “cure” is. So as you are activating and enhancing the specific areas of your home, keep in mind what it is you wish to create. In doing so, you will increase your results ten-fold. The reason for this is simple; every time you see the changes and enhancements you have made to your home your subconscious is reminded of your desired results.

Q: Where is the wealth area?

A: The wealth area, also known as the abundance area, is in the far-left back corner from your front entry door.

Q: I have heard a lot about the "wealth" corner.  Where is it located and how do I activate it so I may experience more money?

A:  According to the bagua map, the wealth corner of your home is located in the back, left corner.  Also known as the abundance corner, meaning, that wealth and abundance come in many forms, in addition to money.  It's important to keep this area clean and clutter free.  Add a lively plant to this area to encourage "growth" in your finances.
